This sundog - a luminous halo with iridescent fragments - formed in the cold, crisp December air over the gypsum dunes of White Sands. Sundogs are caused by the refraction of light through ice crystals in the atmosphere, and they only occur if the hexagonal plates of the crystals are oriented parallel to the ground.
